Xiang Xuan is a huqin virtuoso with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. She holds a Master of Arts degree from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music (SCM). Between 2003 and 2006, she trained in the gaohu at the middle school affiliated to the Xinghai Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Associate Professor Lei Yeying. Between 2006 and 2010, she trained in the erhu at the Department of Chinese Traditional Instruments of the SCM under the erhu and banhu virtuoso, Huo Yonggang. In 2010, she was admitted to the Graduate School of the SCM with the highest total scores in her department, and began furthering her training programme with erhu as her major and banhu as her minor, under the supervision of Huo Yonggang.
Some of her accolades in recent years include: finalist in the 8th Chinese Music Golden Bell Awards in 2011; a Bronze Award (Erhu) and Silver Award (Goahu) in the Youth Category of the 2nd International Chinese Instrumental Competition in 2010; an Outstanding Award (Guangdong Music) in the Instrumental Ensemble Category of the Wenhua Arts Institutes Awards in 2008; and a Class Two Award in the SCM’s Challenge and Encouragement Awards for her premiere of the solo zhonghu piece, Soundspace, by composer Ye Guohui, which she also played as part of the performance for cultural exchange at the University of Music and Theatre Hamburg as a member of the delegation of the SCM. During her studies, Xiang was awarded the People’s Scholarship many times, and the first ‘Bank of China SCM Scholarship for Outstanding Graduate Students’. She also received the ‘merit student’ scholarship from the SCM as well as the title ‘Outstanding Graduate of Shanghai City’.
